Description
Vintage lithographic poster from ‘Radiotrons’, advertising ball by ball coverage on the radio. Printed in black, blue and green, with stylised batsman and a radio valve behind a list of matches. Designed to advertise ‘Radiotrons’ valves for the radio. Intended to be folded up, image of wicket keeper on reverse. ‘$400’ written on face with pencil, date and prices on reverse.

The Currie Cup was not always played every year, nor did all the teams compete annually. When England’s Test team toured South Africa the competition was suspended and this continued until the 1960s. Sydney Barnes - arguably England’s greatest ever bowler - was the star of the 1913/-14 tour taking 49 wickets at an average of 10.93; however on December 13th South Africa’s Herbie Taylor resisted him to make 101 of South Africa’s 183 all out.
The 1930/-31 series was played on both matting and turf wickets. `Buster’ Nupen was chosen to captain the team and although not selected for the third and fifth Tests played on grass produced his best Test bowling to take 11 wickets in the first (the crucial victory) and 9 wickets in the fourth.
The success of South Africa in England in 1935 perhaps affected their challenge to the Australians that winter. Flying directly to the Cape rather than stopping en route to England and despite lacking Woodfull, Ponsford and Bradman the Australians swept the series with Fingleton, O’Reilly and Grimmett the star performers. It was the first time South African team had played a full year of cricket.
