MCC Tour of 1903
The 1903 side was not identified as MCC until some way into the tour, nor was it referred to as such by the captain Pelham Warner in his book recounting the tour. The label might never have been used again, had the side lost the `rubber’; as fate would have it, MCC won and its name was then preferred overseas to that of England for the next seventy years.
RE Foster was a particular friend of Pelham Warner, captain of the 1903 tour which, it has been written, was funded by money from their wives’ inheritance. Foster kept a hand-written journal of the trip, describing not only the story of the tour but also the experience of scoring his famous 287 at Sydney, the highest individual score by any player to that date.
