Pink balls were developed to enable Test and First-class matches to be played at night. The MCC has played a pivotal role in trialling and promoting the use of it. As previously mentioned the red ball is unsuited to night tests due to poor visibility and the white ball is unsuited to first-class cricket because of its rapid deterioration, the pink ball is an attempted compromise.
