The Australian summer of 1979-80 saw an agreement reached between Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket and the Australian Cricket Board, putting an end to a two-year schism in international cricket caused by Packer’s “rebel” tournament. Part of the regular programme of fixtures agreed was the new Benson & Hedges World Series Cup, a triangular ODI series featuring Australia, England and West Indies. England, used to playing all their limited overs cricket in whites and fearing disadvantage in the new format, objected to the Packer innovation of coloured clothing, even when using a white ball under floodlights. Although in the end they consented to wear navy blue pads, the proposed compromise of a white shirt with coloured trim – seen above - was rejected in favour of pure white. Limited overs cricket in England continued to be played in exclusively in whites until 1993 at county level and 1998 for One-Day Internationals.
