With the coming of the railways in the 19th century an opportunity arose for teams of professional cricketers to tour the country, providing an opportunity for local teams to compete against the best in the land. William Clarke’s All England XI were the first of these touring teams and Clarke, a hard-nosed businessman, handled all their business dealings at considerable advantage to himself. Eventually, in 1852, two of his disgruntled players, John Wisden and James Dean, broke away to found the rival United All England XI.
As well as publishing the Guide to Cricketers, Fred Lillywhite ran the printing tent at Lord’s from 1848 to 1865 and was instrumental in organising the 1859 tour of North America, transporting his printing press with him. Here he is seen behind the counter of his tent, next to sometime business partner and later rival, John Wisden.
