As a cricketer, Sir Francis Eden Lacey enjoyed a distinguished 17-year first class career with Hampshire, captaining the county for six years from 1888. But it is for his time as Secretary of MCC (1898 to 1926) that he is best remembered. A barrister by trade, Lacey brought a keen business brain to the job. It was during his tenure that MCC took over responsibility for overseas tours from England while the formation of ICC ensured the Club’s influence over the world of cricket. On retirement he was appointed a Trustee of the Club and was knighted for his services to cricket.
