Thomas Lord was an ambitious Yorkshireman who had come to London to remake the family fortune lost during the Jacobite Rebellion. He was an astute businessman who, in addition to work at the White Conduit Club, also ran a wine merchants. Lord was a capable cricketer but Winchilsea and his associates were attracted by his business instinct. Lord was quick to seize the opportunity. He obtained a lease on part of the Portman family estate in the area then known as Dorset Fields, erected a high wooden fence and built a hut for cricketers to store their equipment.
