Joshua Reynolds
Copper engraving
Half length, three quarter turned portrait of early cricket
patron John Frederick Sackville wearing a dark velvet
coat and white cravat. Below is an inscription and the
Duke of Dorset’s coat of arms, a shield flanked by
cheetahs. Dorset became one of the first members of
MCC in 1787.
Sackville played for Kent, Hampshire and England
between 1773 and 1783, making his highest first-class
score of 77 for Kent against Hampshire in 1774. Like
many cricket-loving aristocrats of his age, he also
assembled his own teams to take on those of other
patrons, like Sir Horace Mann, with large sums of money
at stake.
