George Lohmann pictured as part of Lord Sheffield’s team V MCC Club and Ground, 25-26 May, Sheffield Park, Sussex, 1891 M.2015.353
Lohmann, ‘one of the most effective bowlers
English cricket has produced’, was originally
selected to tour with Major Warton’s side
but withdrew on medical grounds. He did
however later travel to South Africa for his
health and there struck up a friendship with
a dynamic businessman and patron of cricket
George Logan.
His stays in South Africa involved him in
the Currie Cup (see Cricket in South Africa
cabinet) and there is no doubt his presence
proved ‘an immense attraction for the
Tournament’.
His connections rendered him a crucial
organiser in Lord Hawke’s Tour of 1895-96,
his friendship with Logan securing financial
support and his extraordinary bowling
ensuring his side’s success, though with
reduced gate money on account of the
volatile political situation of the time.
