There are a number of small works by Albert Chevallier Tayler in the MCC collection. Most of these are figure studies of some of the most notable cricketers around the turn of the 19th century (digital copies of which may be playing on the scoreboards behind you) but this picture evidences his interest in the atmosphere of a cricket match, so clear in the large picture of Kent vs Lancashire at Canterbury hanging above.
The scene is here set at Lord's during the Eton vs. Harrow match of 1886 and details a single fielder in front of the Pavilion (rebuilt in 1890) and `A' enclosure. The delicate impressionistic feel captures the air of what was one of the social sporting highlights of the year.
A keen cricketer himself, Chevallier Tayler was an established part of the St. John's Wood scene at this time and presented the picture to MCC himself.
