Sir James Gunn (1893-1964)
Oil on canvas
Stanley Christopherson was one (and some say the most talented) of ten Christopherson brothers who played the sport of cricket as an amateur in Kent in the late 19th century. He played first-class cricket for Kent 1883-88, and in three matches in 1890. He was also selected to play for England in the Second Test match against Australia at Lord's in 1884. From 1886 he was hampered by an arm injury and this effectively ended his first-class cricket the following year. Christopherson was President of MCC between 1939 and 1946, the longest period anyone has held the office; he was reputed to have rarely missed a Committee meeting.
James Gunn attended drawing lessons from the age of five. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art, the Edinburgh College of Art and the Académie Julian in Paris. From 1929, Gunn devoted himself to portrait painting and received commissions from many leading figures of the day including prime ministers, field marshals, judges, dons, bankers and actors. He was knighted in 1963.
