Bedser’s size 13 cricket boots had to support an immense workload as well as his huge
frame. Before the emergence of Trueman, Statham, Tyson and others, Bedser largely
carried England’s bowling attack. He averaged 56 overs per Test, including 31% of
England’s overs in the summer of 1953. In his 51 Tests he opened England’s bowling
with no fewer than 17 different partners.
