Display caption
An umpire’s coat was traditionally white, making it easier to see a red ball against its background, but the emergence of one day cricket using a white ball has necessitated a change in colour. The custom of umpires wearing coats dates back to the earliest days of cricket when the game was played in everyday clothing. The players would remove their coats or jackets for greater ease of movement, the umpires did not need to do this.
