Some players were renowned more for their health problems than their playing careers. Chris Old, was plagued by injury, mainly to his legs and back, as was Essex bowler Neil Foster to the extent that plates in his body could set off airport metal-detectors. After so many trips to the physio’s table it is no surprise that he later became a chartered physiotherapist. Bob Willis, had operations to both knees in 1975, but managed to carry on bowling for another nine years, taking 325 wickets from his 90 Tests. Sustained damage often required the removal and replacement of worn joints.
