Leg-spinning all-rounder, Test captain, broadcaster,
Richie Benaud seems to have been a constant
presence in cricket since his Test debut in 1952. As a
player he claimed 248 wickets and scored 2,201 runs
in his 63 match Test career. As captain of Australia he
brought a freshness of approach, especially in relations
with the media, which would serve him well in his later
career. The 1960/61 series against West Indies,
captained by Frank Worrell, was a highlight of his
career, played in an enterprising but sporting spirit and
forever remembered for the tied Test at Brisbane.
Benaud was later a prominent supporter of Kerry
Packer’s efforts to bring competition into TV rights for
cricket and became one of the best-known and bestloved voices in cricket broadcasting. He received an
O.B.E. for his services to cricket in 1962.
