Andy Flower was probably the most successful international cricketer in Zimbabwean history when, during the 2003 ICC World Cup, he and team-mate Henry Olonga wore black armbands to symbolise the death of democracy in Zimbabwe. They issued a joint statement in which they declared their pride in playing for Zimbabwe but that they could not “in good conscience take to the field and ignore the fact that millions of our compatriots are starving, unemployed and oppressed.” They appealed for an end to human rights abuses and a return to “sanity and dignity”.
