Portrait of Brian Lara (1969-), 2005
Justin Mortimer (1970-)
Oil on canvas
Shirtless, in a pair of board shorts and West Indies cap, Brian Lara, one of West Indies’ greatest ever batters, seems relaxed strolling along in a bright white light.
At 23 Lara stormed onto the Test scene with a maiden century of 277 at Sydney. Twenty years later he was appointed Honorary Life Member of the MCC, after a career that broke many records, including his innings of 501* for Warwickshire against Durham in 1994, which remains a world record for a first-class score, and 400* for West Indies against England in 2004, still a record at Test level.
Artist Justin Mortimer intended for the picture to be hung unframed on a white wall to give the impression that the form was stencilled onto the wall rather than pinned down to a fixed place or moment. But for practical reasons MCC framed it.
