Portrait of Sir Clyde Walcott, 1997
Justin Mortimer (1970)
Charcoal on paper
For cricket lovers of a certain generation, the ‘Three W’s’ – Worrell, Weekes and Walcott – will always have a special allure. Of these three, Walcott was the belligerent destroyer of bowlers, a man who believed in attack from the first ball, always devastating off the back foot. Walcott burst on the scene for Barbados aged 20 when he and Worrell put on 574 for the fourth wicket against Trinidad. His first Test century came in India three years later, and was followed in 1950 by a powerful 168 not out which helped West Indies to their first Test victory at Lord’s. In all Walcott amassed 3,788 runs in 44 Tests with 15 centuries. During the period of West Indies international domination from the mid 1970s to early 1990s, Walcott served as West Indies coach, selector and lastly President of the West Indies Cricket Board. He was appointed Chairman of ICC in 1993 and knighted for his services to cricket in 1994.
