Justin Mortimer (1970-)
Oil on canvas
Painted in the corner of the canvas, former Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath is depicted in a thoughtful mood shortly after retirement and just two years after losing his wife to breast cancer.
McGrath was part of an Australian team that dominated world cricket for more than a decade; he claimed five-wicket hauls on each of his three Test appearances at Lord’s.
British artist Justin Mortimer depicts him surrounded by darkness, wearing his wedding ring. According to the artist ‘the space is for the memories’ and the shadow behind the form ‘hints at another presence’. In this portrait there is a strong sense of loss, a reminder that this national hero is ‘just a man’.
