Sarah Raphael (1960-2001)
Oil on canvas
Painted from life wearing his West Indies blazer, former
captain ‘Garry’ Sobers is depicted by artist Sarah Raphael
in the quiet confines of the MCC Secretariat at Lord’s.
Sir Garfield Sobers needs no introduction, widely
recognised as the greatest all-round cricketer of all time.
His career ended in 1974 at the age of 38; he was
knighted by Queen Elizabeth in his home country of
Barbados in person in 1975. MCC’s portrait
commissioning scheme began in earnest over 15 years
later and consequently Sobers is pictured in retirement at
a time when even cricketers of his stature faced an
uncertain career path.
Sarah Raphael was an assured draftswoman and
described by the then Director of the National Portrait
Gallery as `one of the finest figurative artists of her
generation‘. Her paintings however became increasingly
abstract and just three years after this picture was
completed, she produced disorientating and sharply
coloured series of work. It may be that the distortion and
colouring included in this painting prefigure her change in
style and they certainly shape its disquieting and
melancholic tone.
