Biography on reverse reads: "G. S. Chappell - Australia
Ashes retained in Australia 1982/83 P.5 W.2 D.2 L.1
Gregory Stephen Chappell was born in Unley, South Australia on 7-8-1948. Like his brother Ian, a brilliant batsman he also bowled right hand medium pace. Chappell scored 108 on his Test debut against England in 1970. In 1975 against the West Indies, Chappell became the first player to score hundreds in both innings of his first Test as captain. An efficient rather than inspiring captain, he won the 1979/80 series against England 3-0, but being a 3 match series, the Ashes were not contested. Because of his involvement with World Series Cricket, Chappell missed several Tests but in 1982/83 he regained the Ashes for Australia. In Chappell's last Test against Pakistan in 1984 he scored a century - this becoming the first player to do so in his first and last Test. In 87 Tests, Chappell scored 7110 runs (including 24 centuries) at an average of 53.86 and took 47 wickets at an average of 40.70."
