John William Henry Tyler Douglas was born in Clapton, London on 3-9-1882. An outstanding all round sportsman, Douglas won the Olympic Middleweight Boxing title, 1908, represented England at amateur soccer and led England on two Test tours to Australia. An excellent middle order batsman and right arm fast medium bowler, Douglas made his debut for Essex in 1901. Douglas captained England in 18 Tests. The first came on his Test debut in the first Test of the 1911/12 tour when he had the captaincy thrust upon him by P.F. Warner's illness. In the 4th Test he took 5 for 46, regaining the Ashes with his last wicket. In 23 Tests Douglas scored 962 runs at an average of 29.15, and took 45 wickets at an average of 33.02. Douglas died on 19-12-1930 when he tragically drowned whilst attempting to rescue his father in a shipping accident in Denmark."
