After their formation in 1864, Middlesex’s first major achievement was to be crowned ‘Champion County’ in 1878 –though this was unofficial, as the County Championship was not established until 1890. A year prior to this achievement they had come to an agreement with MCC to play their matches at Lord’s – which remains today. The Widen Almanack of 1962 and Roy Webber’s book ‘The Cricket County Championship’ stated that Middlesex was the Champion County for that year; W G Grace’s book ‘Cricket’ published in 1903 believed Nottinghamshire to be the winner.
