Description
Game of Pallone in progress. The pitch is within the moat of Aragon, Naples, Italy. Spectator stands at either end. Horses and carriages in the foreground.
"The moats seen in the picture are those which used to follow the old walls of Aragon in Naples on appoximately the site of the present Corso Garibaldi. The turrets seen on the left in the background of the composition are those of the Carmin Fort, the bridge with the two pylons exactly corresponds with that shown in the old maps, and which led - to the left of anyone facing the picture - to the gate of the market" - Letter from Cecil Gould (Assistant Keeper, The National Gallery) to Curator (Diana Rait Kerr) 22 August 1947, relaying information received on MCC's behalf from the "cultural attache of the Italian Embassy"
