- Historique d'archiveChristopher Dennis Alexander Martin-Jenkins was born in Peterborough, England on the 20th January 1945. He married Judith Hayman in 1971 and they had three children, two sons James and Robin (the latter played county cricket for Sussex) and a daughter, Lucy. Martin-Jenkins was educated at St. Bede’s School, Marlborough College and Cambridge University. Whilst at Marlborough, he captained the Marlborough cricket XI at Lord’s, scoring 99 against Rugby. Martin-Jenkins went to FitzWilliam College, Cambridge, to study Modern History and obtained a 2.1 and an MA, but did not obtain a cricket Blue, despite playing in three final trials at Fenner’s. Following his time at Cambridge, Martin-Jenkins played for Surrey Club and Ground and in 1971 he played a match for Surrey’s Second XI. He also became an assistant at The Cricketer in 1967, at which time E W (Jim) Swanton was the editor. After three years at The Cricketer, he moved to the BBC, replacing Brian Johnston as the BBC’s cricket correspondent in 1973. Martin-Jenkins had written to Johnston whilst he was at Marlborough asking him how to become a cricket commentator; Johnston told him to practice commentating into a tape recorder. Martin-Jenkins was used at the BBC for football reports in the first instance, also working for the Sunday Telegraph on football. Martin-Jenkins commentated on his first match in August 1972 at Old Trafford, a One Day International between England and Australia. Martin-Jenkins remained the BBC’s cricket correspondent until 1991. He was cricket correspondent for the Daily Telegraph between 1991 to 1999 and The Times from 1999 to 2008. He was a member of the Test Match Special team from 1973 to 2012. Martin-Jenkins was also an author of several books, including ‘The Complete Who’s Who of Test Cricketers’ in 1980. He received an MBE in 1999, and from 2010-2011 was President of MCC. The notebooks in this collection were acquired from Martin-Jenkins’ wife Judith in June 2014. They include handwritten notes on matches observed by Martin-Jenkins throughout his career as a broadcaster and journalist, beginning with the MCC tour of India in 1976-1977 and concluding with England’s Test series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates in 2012. The notebooks also include newspaper cuttings such as articles, scorecards and bowling and batting averages. The majority of notebooks in this collection are in the form of diaries, though the contents do not match the years specified; Martin-Jenkins’ notes on the 2011-2012 England vs. Pakistan series in the United Arab Emirates were made in a Weatherbys Racing Diary from 2000, with the initials ‘C.M.J.’ inscribed on the front.
