Oil and flock on canvas
Making his Test debut at the age of just 20 in 1966,
Bedi went on to be the most successful of the quartet
of spin bowlers who baffled India’s opponents for much
of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Claiming a total of
266 wickets including a remarkable 14 five-wicket
hauls in just 67 Test matches, the turbaned, bearded
Bedi became a familiar figure in English cricket thanks
to six seasons with Northamptonshire. He was an even
more familiar sight to England’s batsmen at Lord’s in
1974, when he bowled for 64.2 overs on his way to
figures of 6 for 226.
