- Sir George Oswald Browning Allen, universally known as ‘Gubby’, is shown here seated in the Committee Room of the Pavilion during a match. Painted from life by Royal Academician John Ward it shows the sitter during his off-field career. Allen served as MCC Chairman of Selectors from 1955-1961, Chairman of the MCC Cricket Committee from 1956-1973, MCC President in 1963-1964 and Treasurer from 1964-1976. On the field Allen captained the MCC tour of Australia in 1936-1937, narrowly losing the Ashes series to Bradman’s Australians. His first-class career spanned 30 years. Ward worked as an illustrator for the glossy fashion magazine Vogue. It was during this time that he produced spontaneous sketches of models – an experience of lasting importance that proved useful when working with a wide range of celebrity sitters.
