Born 1877; appeared first for Yorkshire in 1898, and for England in 1899; has played regularly for both since; one of the best all-rounders the game has produced; created a sensation with his slow bowling during his early years, and soon developed as an all-England batsman. Opening the English innings at Melbourne in 1912, made 179 in first wicket stand with Hobbs, which realized 323. Has obtained over 40 centuries in first-class cricket, and taken over 2,500 wickets for Yorks alone."
