- Historia del archivoHelen Elizabeth (Betty) Archdale was born in Paddington, London on 21 August 1907. Her mother Helen was a suffragette, while her godmother was Emmeline Pankhurst. She was educated at Bedales in Hampshire (where she learnt to play cricket) and St Leonards in St Andrews, Scotland. She then studied at McGill University in Montreal, achieving an MA in Economics and Political Science in 1929. Archdale captained the first-ever England Women’s cricket team tour to Australia and New Zealand in 1934-1935, where England played three Tests against Australia Women, winning two and drawing the other. They also defeated New Zealand Women by an innings and 337 runs at Christchurch. Archdale was due to return to Australia in 1939 for another tour but it was cancelled due to the Second World War. Instead, Archdale joined the Women’s Royal Naval Service, where she led a group of Navy women away from the Japanese threat to Singapore. Archdale received an MBE in 1946, and became a Principal of a Women’s College at Sydney University, as well as a broadcaster and lecturer. Archdale was one of the first ten women to become an MCC member when female membership was permitted by MCC in 1999. Archdale died in Sydney, New South Wales, on 11 January 2000. The records in this collection consist of scrapbooks compiled by Archdale during the England Women’s tour of Australia and New Zealand in 1934-1935.
