Portrait of Benjamin Aislabie on Horseback (1814)
Oil on canvas
Benjamin Aislabie, shown here wearing a red riding coat seated on a bay horse, was the first Secretary of MCC, a post he held from 1822-1842, combining it with that of President in 1823. He served the Club for over 40 years and was renowned as an after-dinner speaker, often performing his own cricket songs and poems.
This portrait is typical of the work produced by English genre painter William Novice, who focused on portraits in domestic settings often incorporating horses.
