Production reason

Production notes
Painted over two mornings in Headingley. Photographs and sketches were used in the artist's studio following this, over a period of 3 - 4 months period. Vaughan tried on a couple of different shirts and hats, 'although they proved a distraction, as did holding a bat' according to the artist. Artist brief from MCC: 'The portrait shall be representational and recognizably a picture of Michael Vaughan. The painting shall contain clothing or items that denote him to have been an England Cricketer.'
Originally the background included sunglasses and sunhat on a floating shelf behind the head. It was requested by MCC Arts & Library committee members that the original background was painted out prior to accepting the commission.

Oil on canvas
Former England captain Michael Vaughan is depicted
here wearing his England Test shirt with ECB logo
unusually depicted on the right-hand side. This serves
to form a triangular pictorial structure with the Vodafone
and Adidas logos anchoring the sleeve, head and chest.
The detail and sharpness of the logos emphasises the
power of commercial sponsorship and are an important
connection within the structure of the portraits identity.
On meeting the player the artist immediately associated
Vaughan with the colour blue, which appears in many
different tones in the composition. Most notable is the
electric blue background painted using a fine brush to
create subtle depths in colour.
