Portrait of Nasser Hussain, 2008
James Lloyd (1971)
Oil on canvas
The first time that artist James Lloyd met former Essex and England Captain Nasser Hussain, he completed a charcoal sketch of his head and neck as seen here in the background of the portrait. This sketch was taped to the wall of his London studio where Hussian briefly sat and was a constant source of reference throughout the painting process.
Widely known for his painterly realism, Lloyd has captured the atmosphere in the studio with intelligence and accuracy. Hussain is pictured slouching in a chair with a sense of urgency and energy in his face. The spectator senses that Hussain may have found it hard to sit still and that he would much rather be doing something else.
