Peter Barker Howard May was born in Reading on 31-12-1929. An outstanding middle order batsman, May first apepared for Cambridge University and Surrey in 1950. On his Tets debut against South Africa in 1951, May scored 138 runs. When L. Hutton retired, May became England captain and in 1956 he retained the Ashes. A shrewd captain who led by example, May skippered England in a record 41 Tests. Ill health and business commitments brought a premature end to May's Test career in 1961 at the age of 31. In 66 Tests, May scored 4537 runs at an average of 46.77. In recent years May held the position of Chairman of the England Test Selection Committee."
