Game of Cricket Snuff Box, after picture by Francis Hayman of cricket in the Artillery Ground, Finsbury c.1743. Black Papier mache, with painted pictorial lid, hinged, oblong; (?) 18th century. Design: the game is played with a two-stump wicket and curved bat; scorer notches runs. The players wear knee-breeches (different colours from the original). On the two ends of the box are coloured tartan stencil.

The lid of this black papier mache snuff box is decorated after Francis Hayman’s painting Cricket in the Artillery Ground, c.1743. The Artillery Ground in Finsbury is situated north of the City of London and was the original ground of the London Cricket Club. It has belonged to the Honourable Artillery Company since 1638.
