Better known as ‘Mike’, Richard Arthur Henry Mitchell played for Eton and Oxford University and appeared eight times for the Gentlemen against the Players. During the 1860s and 1870s he frequently played for MCC and Free Foresters. An Assistant Master at Eton, he acted as cricket coach for the school between 1862 and 1897 and was widely credited with a great improvement in the quality of Eton cricket. He served on the MCC Committee from 1902 until his death in 1905.
Albert Chevallier Tayler specialised in portrait and genre painting. A keen cricketer, in 1905 he produced a series of twelve watercolours of prominent players and the following year, as well as this portrait, his famous landscape of Kent v Lancashire at Canterbury.
