Oil and flock on canvas
Former Indian captain Dilip Vengsarkar depicted ‘bowledout’ in retirement, although during his playing career he achieved the rare feat of scoring hundreds in three consecutive Test appearances at Lord’s. Vengsarkar’s portrait was commissioned by MCC as part of a triptych with Bishan Bedi and Kapil Dev by MCC to honour the 75th anniversary of the first All India Test tour to England in 1932.
Vengsarkar played 116 Tests for India, captaining the side in ten of them. He was part of the winning 1983 World Cup squad and took over the captaincy from Kapil Dev after the 1987 World Cup.
Vengsarkar was painted from life in Mumbai by British Artist Stuart Pearson Wright, although the stadium backdrop was constructed - primarily using a nylon material ‘flock’ to represent grass - later in London from photographs.
