Jennifer McRae (1959-)
Watercolour and pencil on paper
Painted from life in his Vincent's Club tie, worn traditionally
by `Blues‘ at Oxford University, the former Indian cricketer
was the 9th and last Nawab of Pataudi.
The first Indian to captain Oxford, he was a Wisden
Cricketer of the Year in 1968 despite losing an eye in a car
accident. Considered one of India’s greatest captains, he
was later appointed the manager of the National team and
member of the council of the IPL.
In 2007, in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of
India's Test debut, MCC commissioned a trophy for Test
match series between India and England which was
named the Pataudi Trophy in honour of his contribution and
that of his father, Iftikhar Ali Khan, who represented both
England and India.
This portrait is typical of McRae’s delicate illustrative
style; the artist‘s other sitters include Michael Vaughan
and Andy Flower.
