Arthur Percy Frank Chapman was born in Reading on 3-9-1900. An attacking batsman and occasional bowler, Chapman had a brilliant school and University career before being selected for England in 1924. In 1926 he captained England for the first time, winning the 5th Test and regaining the Ashes. Chapman's team retained the Ashes on the 1928/29 tour, where he won the first 4 Tests and missed the last. Although an outstanding captain, Chapman's batting became inconsistent and he was not selected for England after the 1930/31 tour of South Africa.
