Biography on reverse reads: "Walter Hammond (Gloucestershire) Possibly England's finest all-rounder. Born in Dover on June 19th, 1903. In 1927 he broke a record of W. G. Grace's by scoring 1,000 runs in May! He first visited Australia in 1927/28, and scored 905 runs in the Test Match series, beating a record held by Sutcliffe, but subsequently beaten by Don Bradman. When Australia visited in England in 1930, Hammond distinguished himself with a century in the Third Test. Hammond's highest score is 251, at Sydney in the Second Test of the 1928/29 tour. His best match, however, was in 1928 when, against Surrey, he scored 139 and 143 and also took ten catches in the slips."
