Biography on reverse reads: "Gilligan, A.E.R., Sussex. Born 1894; member of Cambridge University XI, 1919-20, and of Sussex XI. since 1920; Captain. 1922, toured S. Africa with F. T. Mann, 1922-23. A useful batsman and clever bowler, one of the mainstays of his County side. With F. G. Naumann put on 177 for last wicket, Cambridge University v. Sussex, 1919."
