Cigarette card depicting a coloured illustrated portrait of William Bates taking guard. He is wearing cricket whites, pads and batting gloves. Series No.2.
Biography on reverse reads: "W. E. Bates (Glamorgan). While his father, "Billie" Bates earned great fame with Yorkshire, William Edric Bates could not secure a regular place in that county eleven. From 1907-13 he scored 2,634 runs, but then decided to qualify for Glamorgan, whome he joined in 1914. A consistent batsman with a variety of strokes and a watchful defence, Bates soon made good. Last summer, at the age of 43, he scored two separate hundreds in his opening game (Essex) and, making 200 against Worcestershire, played his highest innings in first-class cricket. In all county matches of 1927 Bates obtained 1,575 runs-another Glamorgan record."
