- HistoryThe National Cricket Association (NCA) was established in 1968 to look after the recreational game of cricket, following a warning to the MCC Committee in 1967 that a form of re-organisation was required if MCC was to retain its status as the governing body of cricket. The aims of the NCA were to provide the widest possible membership for cricketers, co-ordinate cricket activities, promote the playing of cricket, and meet the challenge from other sports and leisure pursuits. They were to achieve these aims by offering coaching schemes, help to youth and school cricket, insurance for clubs and players, advice on grants and sponsorship, and publications. The National Cricket Association’s first Secretary was J G Dunbar – who was also an Assistant Secretary of MCC. He was replaced by B J Aspital in 1974, and the records in this collection relate to when both Dunbar and Aspital were Secretaries of NCA. With the advent of the England and Wales Cricket Board in 1997, the NCA was incorporated into ECB alongside the Test and County Cricket Board (TCCB). The subjects of the files in this collection include the NCA England Young Cricketers’ tour of the West Indies in 1976 managed by G H G Doggart, arrangements for the NCA/Lord’s Taverners under 13 competition in 1976, coaches’ application forms, meetings with the Sports Council.
